Over 40 years of Music Education

Thank you for joining us and letting us share our passion with you.

For over 40 years Tafelmusik has been at the heart of music education on the Wirral and areas further afield. The heart of our business is in Oxton, at 43 Shrewsbury Road. It’s the hub of our activities and the place we like to call home. Every week our team of dedicated teachers deliver music lessons to ambitious musicians of all ages and all abilities and we pride ourselves on the community we’ve created.

Children and adults get to learn their chosen instruments, with our experienced music teachers developing a learning pathway suitable for each individual, whether it be an examination route or simply one of pleasure.

Our younger musicians join us before they’ve even started school, attending our children’s music workshops; setting the scene for the musical journey that lies ahead of them.

We want you to learn and experience music then put into practice everything that you’ve learned, sharing your achievements through performance. We believe that every musician should have the opportunity to share their music making so we provide various means for you to be able to do this.

Please take the time to find our more about our humble beginnings in our story and I invite you to join me for my regular blog, sharing some of my own experiences, stories and advice.

If at any time you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We’d love to hear from you.

Best wishes and happy music making.

Our Story

Tafelmusik Logo

Our Beginnings

Tafelmusik started as an organisation devoted to organising concerts, courses and musical evenings.

It developed into a music school in 1979 after our founder, Peter Rainsford, was inspired by a trip to Moscow, visiting various schools and factories. The talented performances of Moscow’s children pushed encouraged him to return home and offer quality music tuition on the Wirral.

You can read more about our story in Peter’s regular blogs.

The place we call home

In 1980, we moved from our first home in Church Road, Tranmere, to our current home on Shrewsbury Road in Oxton.

It’s the hub of our music-making.

As well as our many teaching studios, it houses our own performance space, the JPR Concert Room and our concert grand piano.

Peter’s Musical Background

From an early age, Peter Rainsford has had a life dedicated to music-making and providing a platform for others to experience the joy of music.

After learning the piano as a child, Peter went on to study piano at the Royal Northern College of Music where he graduated with a special merit in performance.

He then went on to further study at what is now Liverpool Hope University, taking a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

In recent years, Peter has also taken courses in Life Coaching and Educational Coaching at Newcastle College.

Peter has combined his concert activities with a successful teaching practice and established Tafelmusik as a means of sharing his ideas and values on music education. These values include:

  • Offering first rate teaching within a friendly and fun environment.
  • Providing opportunities for musicians of all ages to share their music-making.
  • Helping pupils to develop their confidence..
  • Encouraging children from the earliest ages to have a firm musical foundation.
  • Coaching and mentoring musicians in terms of how to practice and getting the best out of their musical skills

Here's to the next 40 years!

After 40 years of bringing music making to thousands of musicians, we’re really looking forward to the chapter of our story and the next 40 years.

Thank You!

We couldn’t have done it without you.
